In the conversation around self-care, a lot of emphasis is placed on doing things to the outside of your body. That’s not a bad thing. In many ways, how you take care of the outside of your body has a lot of impact on how the rest of your body feels, including your happiness. That’s why things like baths make you more relaxed and skin care can make you happier.

But self-care is a holistic experience, and it doesn’t stop at just being good to your outsides. Think about it: You could spend a lot of time washing and detailing your car to keep it looking shiny and new, but if you never change the oil, it’s never going to run properly. Your body is the same way. Focusing on what’s going on inside can be hard because you don’t see the effects as immediately as when you have a good hair day, for instance, but it’s more about how it makes you feel and how healthy you are (in the long run).

Sleep is an obvious part of self-care (who among us doesn’t love to be well-rested), but wellness as self-care involves more. Supplements can improve your mood, of course, and so can your sex life. These days you can also use things like cannabis to improve your bodily functions and cut pain (instead of just getting stoned). To really take your self-care to the next level, look at all areas of your life, not just your bathroom cabinet.
