BATH

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the honey-coloured city of Bath was developed as a fashionable spa in the 18th century and is a perfect example of a Georgian town. It was the Roman Baths that first established the city and, still remarkably complete, they form the most impressive Roman remains in Britain. Adjacent is another must-see site, Bath Abbey, dating mostly from the 16th century. A short walk away is the Royal Crescent, built between 1767 and 1774. This glorious terrace of 30 classically inspired three-floor houses in glowing golden Bath stone is often claimed to be the most majestic street in Britain.

Just outside Bath, at Claverton, is the excellent American Museum, which features 15 authentically re-created 17th- to 19th-century rooms.
