These biscuits are served by southern ladies for luncheons and for Sunday dinner. They are heavenly with fried chicken.
4 cups all-purpose flour
¼ cup granulated sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup shortening
1 (¼-ounce) package active dry yeast
2 teaspoons warm water
2 cups buttermilk
Preheat the oven to 475°. In a medium-size mixing bowl sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut in the shortening. In a small bowl soften the yeast in the warm water and stir until dissolved. Mix with the buttermilk and combine this mixture with the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough ball forms. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and roll out to ¼-inch thickness. Cut the dough with a biscuit cutter. Place the biscuits on a buttered baking pan and bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
