French Toast

2 eggs, beaten

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup milk

Butter

6 slices day-old bread

Confectioners’ sugar for serving

Syrup, jelly, honey, or strawberries for serving

Heat a griddle while preparing the batter. To test for cooking temperature, sprinkle with a few drops of water. The heat is right if the water bubbles or bounces around.

In a shallow bowl beat the eggs and stir in the salt and milk. Melt butter on the hot griddle to grease it. Dip the stale bread into the mixture and place on the griddle. Cook until both sides of the bread are browned. Serve hot. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and serve with syrup, jelly, honey, or strawberries.
