These hearty baked beans are a real treat when served with barbeque or hamburgers. They’re a real crowd pleaser.
1 pound ground beef
1 pound mild sausage links, sliced
1 large onion, chopped
1 large green bell pepper, chopped
1 to 2 teaspoons French’s Chili-O mix (to taste)
¼ cup ketchup
¼ cup granulated sugar
4 teaspoons prepared mustard
¼ cup molasses
¼ cup packed dark brown sugar
2 (28-ounce) cans pork and beans, undrained
1 (14-ounce) can dark red kidney beans, undrained
1 (14-ounce) can light red kidney beans, undrained
In a large skillet on medium heat brown the ground beef. When the beef begins to come apart and is partially brown, add the sausage, onion, and bell pepper. Cook until brown. Pour off the excess grease. Turn the heat down to low. Add the chili mix and stir well. Add the ketchup, granulated sugar, mustard, molasses, brown sugar, and the liquid from the beans. Mix well. Cook, stirring often, for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the beans and continue to stir. Turn the heat to high and continue stirring to prevent the beans from sticking. Heat the mixture until bubbly. Turn the heat to low and simmer for 45 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°. Pour the beans into a baking dish and bake for 45 minutes.
Hint: The beans can be topped with strips of bacon prior to baking.
