Granny Smith Apples with Caramel Fondue

12 to 15 (½-ounce) pieces caramel candy

1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk

8 Granny Smith apples

Place the candy in a medium-size microwave-safe bowl. Microwave the candy on medium heat until melted, stirring 2 to 3 times. Remove from the microwave oven and add the sweetened condensed milk. Stir to mix well. Microwave just long enough to blend the caramel and the condensed milk, stirring two or three times.

Wash and slice the apples and arrange them on a tray with a chafing or fondue dish in the center. Place the caramel mixture in the dish over medium heat.

Hint: If possible, the apples should be cut immediately prior to serving to prevent browning. If the apples are not served immediately, place them in cold water with a small amount of lemon juice. Caramel fondue can be prepared ahead, refrigerated, and reheated before serving.
