Spiced Mixed Fruit

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup water

1 cup dry white wine

2 whole cloves

1 (2-inch) cinnamon stick plus 1 for garnish

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

6 navel oranges

3 grapefruits

3 bananas

In a saucepan over medium heat combine the sugar, water, white wine, cloves, and 1 cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes. Stir in the vanilla. Remove from the heat and cool the syrup. Discard the cloves and cinnamon stick.

Peel and section the oranges and grapefruits. Place in a large bowl. Gently stir in the syrup. Chill the mixture if desired. Slice the bananas and stir in just before serving. Garnish with the remaining cinnamon stick if desired.

YIELD: 6 TO 8 SERVINGS
