Mint Juleps were first made in Georgia; however, Virginia lays claim to this distinction also. Kentucky must take credit for the julep’s popularity since it is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. Mint Juleps are a traditional southern favorite and are great for sipping while sitting on the front porch on a warm summer afternoon.
2 sprigs fresh mint
1 rounded teaspoon confectioners’ sugar
2 to 3 drops water
1 plus 1 jiggers bourbon whiskey
Ice, finely crushed
Put the sprigs of fresh mint in the bottom of a tall, thin glass. Add the sugar and a few drops of water. Using a wooden muddler (or wooden spoon), thoroughly bruise the mint with the sugar and water. Pour in 1 jigger bourbon whiskey. Pack the glass to the brim with finely crushed ice. Add the remaining 1 jigger whiskey and let it trickle down to the bottom of the glass. Put a sprig of fresh mint in the top of the glass and serve with two straws.
Hint: If desired, dampen the top sprig of mint with bourbon and dip it in confectioners’ sugar.
