Ingredients:
-
½ cup of whole Masoor lentils (round / flat / brown)
-
½ cup of green French Lentils (round/ green)
-
½ inch of ginger, peeled
-
2 garlic cloves, peeled
-
8 cups of water
-
1 tsp. salt
-
1 tsp. garam masala
-
1 tsp. Turmeric
-
1 tbsp. butter (optional)
Directions:
Pick through the lentils for any stones, wash and drain well.
In a stockpot, add the lentils and enough water to cover them by two inches. Add the garlic and ginger whole. They will flavor the dahl well without being too strong. Add in the spices, bring to boil & let it simmer for 40 minutes. Partly cover the top of the pot. Check and stir frequently to ensure the water has not evaporated. Add more water if needed, cook until the lentils have blended well. The lentils and the water should not be separate. You may add the tablespoon of butter for flavor at the end. Serve warm.
