Jesus of Nazareth, Savior and King
181

Text and music: Hugh W. Dougall (1872–1963; LDS)
Tune name: BERNARD

Whatever the distractions of the week may have been, the ordinance of the sacrament brings with it a time to focus our thoughts upon the sacrifice and atonement of the Savior. The words of this sacrament hymn are a beautiful encouragement to sacred meditation.

Hugh W. Dougall’s hymn text follows the thoughts and emotions of a worshipful congregation during the ordinance of the sacrament: first, we think of the Savior’s sacrifice, the event commemorated through taking the sacrament; second, we eat the broken bread and think of the body of Christ, bruised and torn on the cross; and third, as we sip the sacramental water, we praise the Lord and ask to be led toward salvation.

The tune name, BERNARD, honors William Bernard Dougall, the father of the writer of this hymn. “Jesus of Nazareth, Savior and King” was first published in Latter- day Saint Hymns (1927).
