Text and music: Luacine Clark Fox (b. 1914; LDS)
Tune name: LOVE ONE ANOTHER

Only if we know and exemplify the Savior’s teachings can we claim to be his followers. Some of the last words Jesus spoke to his disciples emphasized the most important mark of that discipleship and reminded them what they must do to be recognized as his true followers: they would be known as disciples of Jesus because of their “love one to another” (see John 13:34–35).

Luacine Clark Fox, who wrote both words and music for “Love One Another,” always approached her creative work with a serious sense of spiritual dedication. She stated: “I have purposely, with very few exceptions, focused my writings, compositions, and artistic endeavors on the Church, feeling that there can be no greater fulfillment in the exercise of a God-given talent than to use it in connection with the work of the Lord. I have a strong testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

She told this story of the writing of “Love One Another”:

“It is always my habit to pray before doing any writing or composing. This I did while in the process of working on ‘Psalm of Easter,’ from which ‘Love One Another’ is taken. In searching the scriptures, I came to the words of the Savior at the Last Supper wherein he gave his new commandment to love one another. I knew that I had found the theme I wanted. As I jotted down the words in my notebook, taken from John 13:34–35, the melody to accompany them came into my mind, and I wrote it down as well. The final result of words and music was exactly the same as had come to me initially, with no variation whatsoever. It is my witness that whatever is of worth in the song came from the Lord.”
