Gates, Brigham Cecil
LDS. American, 1887–1941. Born in Hawaii, the son of Jacob F. and Susa Young Gates, he began music study at an early age and attended conservatories in Boston and Berlin. In 1919 he organized the McCune School of Music and Art in Salt Lake City and five years later became head of the music department at Utah State University at Logan. He was director of the Lucy Gates opera company and the Salt Lake Oratorio Society and served as a member of the General Music Committee of the Church. His settings of “The Lord’s Prayer” and “My Redeemer Lives” are known to many.
