Griggs, Thomas Cott
LDS. English-born American, 1845–1903. Born in Dover, he emigrated to America with his mother in 1856, after their conversion to Mormonism. For four years they lived in Boston, where he became interested in music and learned to play brass instruments. He sang for many years with the Tabernacle Choir and was named to the conducting staff in 1880, functioning as assistant to Ebenezer Beesley. He was a member of the Sunday School General Board for fourteen years and helped to compile the first Deseret Sunday School Song Book. His concern for his deaf daughter, Ivy, led to the organization of the first Sunday School class for the deaf in Salt Lake City.
