Hibbard, Angus S.
American, 1860–1945. Sacred music was a strong avocation for Hibbard, a choir director and devoted member of the Episcopal Church. His professional achievements established him as a noted pioneer in American telephone communication. As General Superintendent for American Telephone and Telegraph Company and General Manager of the Chicago Telephone Company, his talents as an engineer and administrator were significant in establishing what he referred to as the “telephone habit” in the United States. He is credited with the development of the telephone “busy signal” as well as the “Blue Bell” logo familiar to Americans for decades.
