Hinckley, Gordon B.

LDS. American, 1910–2008. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, he graduated from the University of Utah and served a mission to Great Britain. After serving as executive secretary to the General Music Committee beginning in 1951, he was called as Assistant to the Council of the Twelve in 1958 and as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1961. After his call as Counselor in the First Presidency in 1981, he was called as Second Counselor to President Spencer W. Kimball in 1982 and as First Counselor to President Ezra Taft Benson in 1985. In 1995 he was ordained and set apart as the fifteenth President of the Church. Always a great champion of music in the Church, he personally served as advisor to the Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
