Bayly, Thomas Haynes

English, 1797–1839. Educated at Winchester and at Oxford University, he was a songwriter, novelist, and dramatist. He wrote many sentimental ballads and dramatic pieces. He was primarily known as an author rather than a composer, yet it is two songs for which he wrote music as well as words, “Gaily the Troubador” and “Long, Long Ago,” that are best known today.
