Oakeley, Frederick

English, 1802–1880. Born in Worcestershire, he graduated from Oxford and was ordained a minister of the Church of England. He became a supporter of the Oxford Movement, a group that wished to emphasize the sacramental and formalistic aspects of the Church of England and restore some of the elements of Roman Catholic ritual. Eventually he, like John Henry Newman, converted to Catholicism and became a Catholic priest.
