Pratt, Parley Parker

LDS. American, 1807–1857, born in Oswego County, New York. Originally a member of the Baptist church, he heard of the Book of Mormon and was led to investigate the Latter-day Saints. He was baptized by Oliver Cowdery and ordained a high priest by Joseph Smith. He served as a missionary numerous times, both in the United States and in England, and his dedication and skill as a preacher were attested to by many. His loyalty to the Church led to imprisonment and finally to martyrdom. He was the first editor of the Millennial Star, and he wrote Voice of Warning and Key to the Science of Theology. His autobiography is among the most important in LDS Church history.
