Root, George F.
American, 1820–1895. A native of Massachusetts, he became one of America’s best-known composers of popular music, including hymns, ballads, and sentimental songs. He is most famous for his Civil War songs, such as “Tramp, Tramp, Tramp,” “Just Before the Battle, Mother,” and “The Battle Cry of Freedom.” He taught
at music schools in New York and Boston, including the Union Theological Seminary.
