Shipp, Ellis Reynolds

LDS. American, 1847–1939. Born in Davis County, Iowa, she arrived in the Salt Lake Valley at age five. At eighteen, at the request of Brigham Young, she went to live in the Beehive House and was there educated by Karl G. Maeser. She married Milford Shipp and bore five children, two of whom died; and four polygamous

wives joined the household. In 1875 she moved to Philadelphia to attend medical school, graduating with honors despite poor health, scanty finances, and the birth of another child. Returning to Salt Lake City, she practiced medicine and taught nursing for sixty years. She helped found Deseret Hospital, served on the Relief Society General Board, bore four more children, and delivered six thousand babies.
