Sibelius, Jean

Finnish, 1865–1957, born in Hameenlinna. Though his music does not actually use Finnish folk melodies, it reflects profound feelings of Finnish nationalism and a love of the northern landscapes. Jean (also known as Jan) Sibelius wrote many vocal and chamber music works but is best known for his sweeping orchestral tone poems, including Finlandia, and his seven symphonies. In 1897 Finland awarded him a lifetime grant so that he could continue his creative work without financial worry.
