Smith, Joseph Fielding

LDS. American, 1876–1972. He was named after his father, the sixth President of the Church. Blessed with a family heritage of missionary work, Church leadership, and scriptural scholarship, he led a life of industry and dedication in many areas. After serving as a missionary in England, he was ordained a member of the Quorum of the Twelve in 1910 and later became Church historian, publishing Essentials in Church History in 1922. He directed the evacuation of all Latter-day Saint missionaries from Europe before World War II. He became President of the Quorum of the Twelve in 1951 and a Counselor in the First Presidency in 1965. He was sustained as tenth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1970.
