Smith, Samuel Francis
American, 1808–1895. Born in Newton Centre, Massa chusetts, he graduated from Harvard. He also studied at Andover Theological Seminary and became a Baptist pastor. His interest in missionary work was lifelong: he edited the Baptist Missionary Magazine, served as secretary of the Baptist Missionary Union, and toured the
mission fields of Asia and Europe. He is also remembered as an editor of The Psalmist, an important Baptist hymnal. He was a friend and associate of Lowell Mason.
