Bortniansky, Dmitri Stepanovich
Russian, 1751–1825, born in Gluchov, Ukraine. After traveling to Italy to study with the Italian master Baldassare Galuppi, he returned to Russia in 1796, when the Empress Catherine the Great asked him to become conductor of the Imperial Chapel Choir. He set a new standard and style for Russian church music, combining Russian and Italian influences. His numerous sacred compositions, which were edited by Tchaikovsky, filled ten volumes.
