Southern Harmony
William Walker (1809–1875) was the son of Welsh parents who had immigrated to America. He became famous as “Singin’ Billy” Walker, known throughout the Southern United States for his performances of folk songs and religious music. He collected Southern Appalachian folk hymns and tunes and published a selection of them in The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (usually known as Southern Harmony) in Philadelphia in 1835. The collection was immensely popular in the southern United States and went through four editions. It included the tune PROSPECT OF HEAVEN (no. 49).
