LDS. Welsh-born American, 1854–1930. Born in Pen cader, he emigrated at age twelve with his parents to Salt Lake City, Utah, and they settled in the town of Willard. His ambition and musical talent carried him from an obscure boyhood to a place of honor in the history of Latter-day Saint music as conductor, author, and com
poser. George D. Pyper quoted President Wilford Woodruff on the occasion of the Tabernacle Choir’s winning second place, under Evan Stephens’ direction, at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893: “A shepherd boy came down from the mountains and is here today to contest in this great competition” (Stories of Latter-day Saint Hymns, 63).
