Sullivan, Sir Arthur Seymour
English, 1842–1900. Born in Lambeth, the son of a bandmaster, he showed early musical talent, and scholarships allowed him to study organ and composition. He is well remembered for the operettas he composed in collaboration with W. S. Gilbert, including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado, and Yeoman of the Guard; the tuneful charm and satirical wit of these and other operettas spread the names of Gilbert and Sullivan throughout the English-speaking world. Sullivan himself always felt, however, that his most significant work was his serious music, including his religious cantatas.
