Taylor, John
LDS. English-born American, 1808–1887, a native of Milnthorpe. He emigrated to Canada in 1832, then moved to the United States in 1838. His long life of service is one of the most remarkable and inspiring in all the history of the Church. He was present at the martyrdom of Joseph Smith and was himself severely wounded; he served as a missionary in England, France, and Germany; he edited Times and Seasons; he served as a member of the Utah Territorial Legislature; he organized the Primary Association; and he was a prolific writer and journalist. He was ordained an Apostle in 1838; he was sustained as President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1877; and he was sustained as third President of the Church in 1880.
