Theodulph of Orleans

760?–821; born in Spain, but lived his adult life in France. A bishop of the Catholic Church, later canonized as a saint, Theodulph was renowned both as a poet and an administrator. In about 781, Charlemagne heard of his abilities and called him to his court, where he astounded the learned gathering with his knowledge and his creative gifts. As bishop of Orleans, he established free schools for poor children in the surrounding villages. During the political unrest that followed the death of Charlemagne, St. Theodulph was deprived of his bishopric and then imprisoned.
