Toplady, Augustus M.
English, 1740–1778. Born in Surrey, he was educated at Westminster School and at Trinity College, Dublin. Though converted for a while to Methodism, he returned to the Church of England and became a minister. He was a theological opponent of John Wesley, and for many years the two men fought a bitter verbal battle, with Toplady defending the Calvinist doctrine of salvation through election.
