Bradshaw, Merrill

LDS. American, 1929–2000. Born in Lyman, Wyoming, he received his bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees from Brigham Young University and his doctorate from the University of Illinois. He wrote more than two hundred musical compositions during his thirty-seven years as teacher and composer at BYU. Additional activities include extensive writing and speaking on musical and general academic subjects. In 1981 he was named BYU Distinguished Faculty Lecturer, and he was the John R. Halliday Professor of Music and composer-in-residence at BYU. He was a member of the General Music Committee of the Church and was chairman of the Hymnbook Committee responsible for the initial work on the 1985 hymnal. He served on the board of directors of the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition. He and his wife are the parents of seven children, and his many Church callings have included that of bishop.
