Walter, William Henry
American, 1825–1893. A boy of precocious musical skill, born in Newark, New Jersey, he became organist at major New Jersey Protestant churches. His career as organist at several large cathedrals culminated in an appointment as organist at Columbia University, where he received an honorary doctorate in 1864. He published several works pertaining to organ technique and church music.
