Welch, James B.
LDS. American, born 1950 in Whittier, California. He grew up in Los Angeles and was encouraged in musical studies by his family. Later, his organ teachers included Parley Belnap, Alexander Schreiner, and Herbert Nanney; he studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, and at Stanford University, where he received his doctorate in music. He has held a Fulbright fellowship for study in Brazil, where previously he had served as a missionary. As a concert and recording organist, he has toured the United States, Europe, and South America. He is an associate of the American Guild of Organists and has served as dean of the Santa Barbara chapter. From 1977–1993 he was organist and carillonneur at the University of California at Santa Barbara. In 1993 he joined the faculty at Santa Clara University in California, continuing to tour widely, to record, and to publish editions of organ music by Latin American composers. He and his wife Deanne Everson have two sons.
