Williams, William
Welsh, 1717–1791, born near Llandovery. He turned from the study of medicine to music and religion and became perhaps the most important figure in Welsh hymnody. Although he was never ordained a clergyman, by the end of his life he had traveled almost one hundred thousand miles throughout Wales as a preacher. He wrote some eight hundred hymns, all in Welsh.
