Winkworth, Catherine
English, 1829–1878, born in London. Known for her devout nature and her quick mind, she left her mark on English hymnody through her translations of German hymn texts. The two parts of her Lyra Germanica appeared in 1855 and 1888, and in 1863 she published the Chorale Book for England, for which her musical collaborators were Otto Goldschmidt and William Sterndale Bennett. She became affiliated with the Clifton Association for the Higher Education of Women and devoted much of her life, as both teacher and administrator, to the cause of women’s education. She is known today as the foremost translator of German hymn texts into English, and the present Lutheran hymnal includes thirty of her translations.
