Cundick, Robert
LDS. American, born 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He found his musical interests kindled when the Sandy Utah Second Ward installed a new Hammond organ, and he went on to serious study of organ and composition. Among his teachers were Alexander Schreiner, Leroy J. Robertson, and Maurice Abravanel. In 1955 he received his doctorate in composition from the University of Utah. He taught at Brigham Young University until 1962, when he was called to England to serve as organist at London’s Hyde Park Chapel until 1964. In 1965 he was appointed Tabernacle organist, retiring in 1991 as Tabernacle Organist Emeritus. He and his wife, Charlotte Clark, served a mission at the BYU Jerusalem Center, where they hosted visitors, performed recitals, and established the ongoing concert series at the Center. Perhaps best known for “The Redeemer,” a service of sacred music frequently performed by the Tabernacle Choir, he is presently composing music for a text by Elder David A. Bednar, “God’s Everlasting Love,” to be performed by the BYU–Idaho music department in 2009.
