Virginia Johnson begins each illustration or textile design with paint and paper. She paints exclusively in watercolor because of its spontaneity and the way it allows her to work quickly and intuitively. She explains, “I love the way a wet brush soaks the paper and how vibrant the colors are. I am frequently inspired by my travels and by different cultures, crafts, and time periods. I am also particularly drawn to nature, particularly birds, trees, flowers, and animals.”
