Whether in “rooms” found outdoors or under a roof, light, color, and patterns tumble into compositions that form unusual sorts of spaces in Tamara Thomsen’s work. Cherry trees or carved woodwork are both equally and carefully rendered, without embellishment. As elements of horticulture or architecture, they encompass spacious areas in a world where frivolity overwhelms. Her large-scale watercolor paintings study these environments. Entwine, a series of landscapes are based on the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Chambers are a group of architectural interiors found in a 1769 colonial mansion in Philadelphia.
