.winging on a lamp post wasn’t the only past-time for kids in
the Liberties: there were many clubs and societies that they
could join.
Music and dancing
Learning to play an instrument, such the accordian, was a very
popular hobby for many young people. Fortunately, it was possible
to rent your accordian rather than having to buy it upfront, which
was helpful to many families on low incomes. A very successful
accordian school opened on Dean Street at the bottom of Francis
Street and turned out many fine accordian players.
If you were lucky enough to have a dad who was working, you
may have had the opportunity to go to singing or dance class.
Variety clubs and Irish dancing were very popular in the halls,
such as the Marymount Hall in Harold’s Cross, Archbishop
Byrne’s Hall and St Anthony’s Hall on the quays.
