. Dublin pub can be a very special place. Many were more
than just a place to get a drink and enjoy the company of
your neighbours: they were a place where wheeling and dealing
took place, and where friendships and romances were made
In Francis Street, there were several pubs to choose from –
The Barley Mow run by Mr McGowan and his family, Clarke’s
run by Micheál Clarke, along with O’Connor’s, Doyle’s and
Lambert’s, which faced the Tivoli Theatre. It was normal for
Dublin’s streets to have several pubs on them and they were
usually small and family run, with the family living above the
premises, which was the case for the pubs on Francis Street.
Many pubs had a snug, an area where the women could sit and
have a quiet drink away from the talk of racing and the darts.
