“The Phoenix and Turtle” first appeared in a volume with the following title:
LOVES MARTYR: OR, ROSALINS COMPLAINT. Allegorically shadowing the truth of Loue, in the constant Fate of the Phoenix and Turtle.… by ROBERT CHESTER.… To these are added some new compositions, of seuerall moderne Writers whose names are subscribed to their seuerall workes, vpon the first subiect: viz. the Phoenix and Turtle.
The date 1601 appears on a separate title page. One poem is signed “William Shake-speare”; others are assigned to John Marston, George Chapman, and Ben Jonson.
