ICE IS NICE*
‘Who wants ice cream?’ asked Mrs Smith. ‘We all do,’ said Peter, so Mrs Smith started to cut the cubical block into three equal slices in the obvious way. ‘Oh, no! Boring!’ cried Gary, ‘We always have boring old blocks, we want something DIFFERENT.’ ‘Yes, let’s have something new,’ said William, who didn’t notice that he was repeating what Gary had said.
Mrs Smith thought for while, and then sliced the cube of ice cream into three pieces, identical in shape, which used up the whole block, and looked nothing like the usual boring slices.
How did she do it?
(A word of advice: unless you have superpower ability to see things in your head, it is helpful to cut cubes from cheese and experiment – you can eat the cheese later.)
