A BORDER-LINE CASE
‘How long is the boundary between Spain and Portugal?’ asked Pamela, innocently.
‘According to the Spanish map we used last holiday, it’s 987 km,’ replied her father. ‘But the Portuguese customs man disagreed,’ said her mother. ‘He said it was 1,214 km long.’
‘I think they’re both wrong,’ said Pamela. ‘I think that with my little ruler’ – at this point she waved her school ruler in the air – ‘I could measure it exactly, and it would be exactly 2,000 km long!’ ‘Don’t be silly,’ responded her father. ‘Get on with your homework,’ said her mother.
