FAULTY SCORING

John Tuttle and Bill Hemp are playing the final of the regional tennis tournament. Tuttle is serving and the match stands at 5 games all.

[Sound effect] Pok pok pok

Umpire: 15-love

Umpire: 15-all

[Sound effect] Pok

Umpire: 30-15

[Sound effect] Pok pok pok pok pok OUT!

Umpire: Deuce.

Tuttle: Umpire, you must be joking.

Hemp: Tuttle’s right. Everyone knows deuce doesn’t come after 30-15!

Umpire: Sorry, I know it’s unusual, but let’s leave it at deuce anyway, it’s a bit hard to adjust the scoreboard now – unless you want to start this service game again.

After a heated discussion the players finally concede that the umpire leaving the score at deuce is quite fair while starting the game again would give Tuttle an unfair advantage. How do you explain the umpire’s decision?
