THE ALLOTMENT PLOT
Mr Brown, Mr Jones and Mr Smith each had two plots on the local allotment, as this map shows. One day, Mr Brown announced, ‘I’ve decided to build a path straight from one of my plots to the other.’
‘You can’t do that!’ exclaimed Mr Jones. ‘It will be in the way when I want to go between my two plots, and anyway, it will stop me building my own path!’
Mr Brown wasn’t interested in arguments and stubbornly refused to change his mind. So Mr Smith suggested to Mr Jones that they get in first and build their own paths, before Mr Brown had a chance to lay his down.
They did so, and when Mr Brown came to build his path, he discovered that he had to pay for his selfishness.
How were the three pairs of plots joined by paths that did not cross each other?
