ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Marty Appel was the youngest public relations director in baseball history when George Steinbrenner elevated him to the New York Yankees post in 1973. He worked for the team for ten seasons, beginning in 1968, and followed it by producing its games on WPIX television. He helped to coordinate all of Casey Stengel’s five Old-Timers’ Day appearances with the Yankees, and is today the “last man standing” from the Yankees front office, still active in the game, who worked in the original Yankee Stadium, and when Mickey Mantle was still an active player. He is the author or co-author of numerous books, including providing editorial assistance on Commissioner Bowie Kuhn’s memoir, Hardball; the Casey Award–winning biography Slide, Kelly, Slide; a collaboration with Thurman Munson on his autobiography as well as a New York Times bestselling biography of the late Yankees captain, Munson; a personal memoir, Now Pitching for the Yankees; and Pinstripe Empire: The New York Yankees from Before the Babe to After the Boss, which has been cited as the definitive history of the Yankees franchise. He resides in New York City with his wife, Lourdes, and has two grown children, Brian and Deborah.
