Avery hustled his way through the open area toward his office. No matter how friendly he tried to be with Macy, she remained standoffish. Who could blame her? For a man with a reputation as a playboy he hadn’t used his skills to woo her. His ambition to be a better lawyer than his father got in the way.
Sure, Macy smiled and was cordial, but her shoulders tensed any time he approached her. Maybe she needed more time to loosen up and get used to the new person he was trying to be.
The glamour of chasing empty relationships and fast women had dulled. There was a finite number of relationship games a man could enjoy. He needed something more substantial in his life. For now, work was satisfying, but it wasn’t long-term fulfillment.
“Avery, do you have a minute?” Roxy approached him from behind.
Without waiting for him to reply she passed him and continued toward her office, waving him to follow. She closed the door.
She stood behind her Mahogany desk. “Will you be ready for the trip?”
“Yes.” He remained standing as well.
“Good.” She opened a folder on her desk and removed a sheet of paper. “When Macy returns, I’m planning to promote her to VP of Sales. I’m getting some pushback from the other VP’s. They think she’s too young and doesn’t have enough experience. We’ve butted heads on this several times and I’d like more ammunition to get them to agree with me. Celeste is always telling me I don’t see the real Macy and maybe she’s right. I’m hoping you can help.”
“She knows her accounts. I doubt anyone’s better. She’s been bringing me up to speed, and for every question I ask, she has an answer. She’s sharp.”
“I know, but you know how some of the older guys can be. Do me a favor.” Roxy spoke fast. “When you guys get back from your trip I want to meet with Harvey and Ray. They’re giving me the most push back. With your help, I’m hoping to give them an unbiased opinion of her.”
“Sure thing.” He reached for the doorknob. How hard could that be?
“One more thing. I’m not one to pry, but how are things going between you and Celeste? She told me the two of you had dinner last night.”
“Roxy…”
Her phone cut him off.
“I need to get that. Let’s talk when you get back and thank you.” She picked up the receiver and motioned for him to close the door on his way out.
