Ombre Cake

Prepare the cakes by removing the crust on the side with a serrated knife, filling and then layering them.
Apply a crumb coat and leave to set for 30 minutes.
Fit a disposable piping (icing) bag with a round nozzle and fill it with vanilla buttercream. To achieve a scalloped effect on the cake edge, pipe a line of five dots, then smear each dot to the right using the end of a palette knife. (Clean the palette knife after each dot.) Pipe a second line of dots to the right and halfway over the first line, smear them and continue to pipe to cover the whole side of the cake. Start piping the top with the same technique in a spiral formation, starting from the outside and working your way inwards.
