Reversible Camp Rug

Use this cozy reversible rug by the bed for a warm wake-up for your tootsies, or stitch it in a machine-washable yarn for a pet bed or bath mat. You’ll probably want to use a rug pad underneath to prevent slipping. Make the rug any size you like: one ball of each color makes three squares. This uses a variation of Motif 33 (page 101).

Finished Measurements

Approximately 18¾" × 28" (47.5 cm × 71 cm)

Yarn

Cascade Yarns Lana Grande, 100% Peruvian wool, 87 yds/3.5 oz (79 m/100g), 1 skein each #6050 dark brown (A) and #6056 tan (B)

Hook

N/15 (10 mm) or size you need to obtain correct gauge

Gauge

Rnds 1 and 2 = approximately 4¼" (11 cm)

Other Supplies

Tapestry needle

Note: Right side and wrong side are designated below for clarity. But since the rug is reversible, both sides are really right sides.

Square

With A, begin with sliding loop.

Rnd 1 (RS) Ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc in ring, join with slip st to top of ch-3 — 16 dc.

Rnd 2 (RS) Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), skip 1 dc, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next dc, ch 1, skip 1 dc, *dc in next dc, ch 1, skip 1 dc, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next dc, ch 1, skip 1 dc; rep from * around, join with slip st to 3rd ch of ch-4; drop loop from hook, turn.

Rnd 3 (WS) With B, (standing sc, ch 3, sc) in any ch-3 corner space, ch 1, *keeping Rnd-2 sts to the back, (tr in next skipped dc from Rnd 1, ch 1) two times**, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-3 space, ch 1; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join with slip st to first sc; drop loop from hook, turn.

Rnd 4 (RS) Rnd 4 is worked into Rnd-2 sts over Rnd-3 chs unless otherwise stated. Place dropped loop from Rnd 2 onto hook, insert hook into Rnd-3 space and ch 1 to slip st over Rnd-3 ch, ch 3 (counts as dc and ch 1); dc in next dc,* ch 1; keeping Rnd-3 space to the back, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch-3 space between Rnd-3 scs**; working over Rnd-3 chs, (ch 1, dc in next dc) three times; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, ch 1, dc in next dc, ch 1, join with slip st to 3rd ch of ch 4; drop loop from hook, turn.

Rnd 5 (WS) Rnd 5 is worked into Rnd-3 sts over Rnd-4 chs unless otherwise stated. Place dropped loop from Rnd 3 onto hook, insert hook into Rnd-4 space and ch 1 to slip st around Rnd-4 ch, ch 3 (counts as dc and ch 1); *(dc, ch 3, dc) in next space (through both layers), ch 1, dc in next sc, (ch 1, dc in next tr) two times, ch 1**, dc in next sc, ch 1; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join with slip st to 3rd ch of ch-4; drop loop from hook, turn.

Rnd 6 (RS) Rnd 6 is worked into Rnd-4 sts over Rnd-5 chs unless otherwise stated. Place dropped loop from Rnd 4 onto hook, slip st over Rnd-5 chain, ch 3 (counts as dc and ch 1), *(dc in next dc, ch 1) two times; keeping Rnd-5 ch to the back, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch-3 space between Rnd-5 dcs**; (ch 1, dc in next dc) three times, ch 1; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, (ch 1, dc in next dc) two times, ch 1, join with slip st to 3rd ch of ch-4. Fasten off A. Turn.

Rnd 7 (WS) Rnd 7 is worked into Rnd-5 sts over Rnd-6 chs unless otherwise stated. Place dropped loop from Rnd 5 onto hook, insert hook into Rnd-6 space and slip st around Rnd-6 ch, ch 3 (counts as dc and ch 1), dc in next dc, ch 1, *(dc, ch 3, dc) in next space through both layers, ch 1**, working over Rnd-6 chs, (dc in next dc, ch 1) six times; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, (dc in next dc, ch 1) four times, join with slip st to 3rd ch of ch 4. Fasten off B.

Rug

Make one square. Make a second square through Rnd 6. Join to previous square as follows:

Rnd 7 Rnd 7 is worked into Rnd-5 sts over Rnd-3 chs unless otherwise stated. Place Rnd-5 loop onto hook, insert hook into Rnd-6 space and slip st around Rnd-6 ch, ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 1, *(dc, ch 3, dc) in next space through both layers, ch 1**, working over Rnd-6 chs, (dc in next dc, ch 1) six times; rep from * once, (dc, ch 2, flat join to corner of previous motif, ch 1, dc) in next space through both layers, (ch 1, flat join in next space of previous motif, dc in next dc) six times, ch 1, flat join in next space of previous motif, (dc, ch 1, flat join to corner of previous motif, ch 2, dc) in next space through both layers, ch 1, (dc in next dc, ch 1) four times, join with slip st to 3rd ch of ch-4. Fasten off B.

Referring to diagram, join four more squares to form a large rectangle. At interior corners where a fourth square meets three previous squares, work corners as follows:

Dc in next space through both layers, ch 1, flat join in next space of previous motif, ch 1, flat join in corner space of square diagonally-opposite, ch 1, flat join in corner space of next square, dc in same space of current square through both layers.

EDGING

Rnd 1 With A, (standing sc, ch 1, sc) in corner space of Square 1, ch 1, *[(sc in next space, ch 1) eight times, sc in same space, ch 1, sc in next space, ch 1] two times, (sc in next space, ch 1) seven times, (sc, ch 1) two times in corner space, (sc in next space, ch 1) eight times, sc in same space, ch 1, sc in next space, ch 1, (sc in next space, ch 1) seven times**, (sc, ch 1) two times in corner space; rep from * to ** once more, join with slip st to first sc. Fasten off A.

Rnd 2 With B, standing sc in any ch-space along one side, ch 1, *(sc, ch 1) in each space to corner space, (sc, ch 1) two times in corner space; rep from *, ending (sc, ch 1) in each space to end of round, join with slip st to first sc. Fasten off B. Weave in ends.
