chapter 7
D evotion comes in many shapes, forms, and areas of belief. Whether it is organized religion, personal convictions, or spiritual awakening, increasing your devotion is a practice long held by cultures across the span of time and distance. These oil and herbal recipes have been used since the dawn of man to increase one’s ability to effectively increase devotion.
Beliefs
When doubt and fear plague our thoughts, sometimes our belief in something is shaken. To empower your beliefs and help you take a stand in what you believe in, apply some of these oils and blends that have been used for centuries to deepen and instill belief in ourselves, our passions, and our higher power.
Essential Oils
Angelica, bergamot, balsam fir, bay laurel, coriander, frankincense, geranium, jasmine, orange, rosemary, rosewood, and ylang-ylang
Wholehearted Spray
This spray is one that is used to reconnect with the universe, our higher power, and our beliefs. The components of sedative, antidepressant, nervine, and tonic properties work together to calm and provide peace.
Yield: 2 fluid ounces
Recipe
9 drops bay laurel oil
5 drops ylang-ylang oil
5 drops balsam fir oil
2 fluid ounces water
1 tablespoon witch hazel
Add all ingredients to a dark-colored spray bottle. Check for material steadfastness before spraying on fabric. Shake the bottle and spray onto area desired. Do not spray into or on open wounds, genitals, eyes, or mucus membranes. Store in a cool, dark area for up to 3 months. Shake well before each use to combine the ingredients.
Empowerment Salve
This balm is good for my soul, spirit, and positivity as I go about my day. These essential oils are used for enhancing the spiritual experience and bringing back lost faith. Before I spend a day alone, cleaning, or completing chores, I like to use this balm and my thoughts turn repeatedly to faith, beliefs, meditation, and prayer. The sedative properties in this blend have a calming and relaxing effect on our mind and soul, while the tonic agents assist us in completing the tasks at hand.
Yield: 1 fluid ounce
Recipe
1 fluid ounce carrier oil
1–2 ounces beeswax pellets
4 drops vitamin E oil
10 drops frankincense oil
10 drops angelica oil
Heat the beeswax and the carrier oil in a glass bowl in the microwave for 1½–2 minutes, until just melted, or on low on the stovetop. If you open the door every 15 seconds, you can avoid the popping of the wax and oil and overheating. Carefully remove the container from the microwave and stir. Drip a drop of the melted oil and wax onto the counter, after 1 minute check for consistency. If it is too thin, add more beeswax to the container; if it is too thick, add more carrier oil. Add the vitamin E oil and the essential oil to the heated mixture in the container. Whisk lightly, and it will begin hardening immediately. Pour into containers. Ensure your containers are glass or tin to prevent leeching of chemicals. Once cool, apply to wrists, temples, neck, or soles of feet. Do not apply to mucus membranes, eyes, genitals, or open wounds. Label containers and store in a dark, dry area for up to 1 year.

Dry your feet well once you get out of the water, as the oils will cause them to be slippery, increasing your chances of falling. Rinse the tub of any remaining oils.

1 drop clary sage oil
Choose your essential oil and apply to the palm of your hand, an oil inhaler, or a tissue. Bring the essential oils close to your nostrils and inhale the aroma deeply. You can cover one nostril at a time with your thumb and, if you prefer, alternate nostrils. This process sends the properties straight to your brain and the effects are immediate. You can complete this procedure 3–4 times daily.

Hallowed Bath
This bath uses essential oils that have long been purported to open thinking and prayer when communing with Higher Spirit. Open your mind and heart while relaxing in these peaceful and calming scents.
Yield: 1 application
Recipe
4 drops angelica oil
3 drops frankincense oil
3 drops myrrh oil
1 tablespoon carrier oil
1 tablespoon milk (optional for adults, recommended for children)
As you begin to fill the tub with water, pour the chosen essential oils and carrier oil into the running water. Run a warm, not hot, bath. Water that is too hot will cause the essential oils to dissipate. You may add 1 tablespoon of milk to the water; this ensures that the essential oils will not stick to your skin, but will mix with the water. You may soak in the water as long as you are comfortable. Dry your feet well once you get out of the water, as the oils will cause them to be slippery, increasing your chances of falling. Rinse the tub of any remaining oils.

Blessed Ointment
This ointment contains some of the holiest of essential oils to help bring honor and respect to a situation or religious rite. These oils have been used throughout history as a means to express gratitude and surrender to Spirit.
Yield: 1 tablespoon
Recipe
3 teaspoons carrier oil
½ teaspoon beeswax pellets
4 drops vitamin E oil
2 drops frankincense oil
2 drops lemon oil
2 drops clary sage oil
Heat the beeswax and the carrier oil in a glass bowl in the microwave for 1 ½–2 minutes, until just melted, or on low on the stove top.
